Are you doing covers, or originals?

The only advice I can offer is if your doing originals. When you start playing out, you've got to throw in a cover song every 3 or 4 songs to keep the crowd interested. Most new bands playing out will lose the crowd after the first few songs, so throwing in a cover song they know will bring them back.

Always include "the ballad of gator mcclusky" from the movie gator. The audience will go nuts!

Well, I would suggest just going to a bar with the kind of atmosphere you'd like to play in and asking people there what songs they'd like to hear from a band playing there. When a couple people say the same thing, you've got something you might want to consider adding to your list.

As a side note, MUSTANG SALLY seems to be on everybody's song list...
"You must stab him in the heart with the Bone Saber of Zumacalis... well, you could stab him in the head or the lungs, too... and the saber, it probably doesn't have to be bone, just anything sharp lying around the house... you could poke him with a pillow and kill him."
