death metal key??

I wrote a death metal lick and i dont have a clue to tell which key it is so im not sure what to solo over it with...

Any clue? I would like to use the Algerian Scale over it...all help is appreciated

Ok, you have an F# at the beginning, but at the end you have an F natural. Not sure if this is harmonic minor or melodic minor. You also have an F natural at the end but a C sharp in the middle...what the hell is this? GAH, then C natural!!! YARGH!!!! These are chromatics, I see no key.

so is it in a chromatic key??? This lick wasnt made off any scale i know..I heard it in my head and bam it popped out on the fret board

no it is not a chromatic key.

its a very wierd key.. a mixture of several ones i´d say

if you look at it and you start from the e as lowest note you have this structure:

e-f-f#-g#-a-c-c#-e which is

e, half, half, whole, half, one.and.a.half, half, one.and.a.half

there are some scales that have similarities lie oriental scales like byzantine or persian scales.
the thing that comes closest is probably the Neapolitan minor Scale.

if you start your scale on f, you got this:

f-f#-g#-a-c-c#-e-f

neapolitan minor starting on f is:

f-f#-g#-a#-c-c#-e-f

its just the 4th that is different. yours is a diminished 4th while neapolian is perfect 4th :)

Do what I do. Don't worry about it. If you make something within key then cool, but usually (always) when I make something up without thinking of any rules, so to say, it ends up out of a lot of keys. Best thing I do in that case is just find somewhere it fits, things don't have to be perfect to work together, that's what makes the music history as cool as it does. Because a lot of people just say "if it sounds good, do it". Not that I have issues with keys and so forth, I just don't like to tame myself with my writing.

of course anything that goes on top of this should be done by ear rather than by theory. i personally have hardly ever wasted a thought on any of my compositions theory-wise.
thats why i will never understand why most guitarrists are so fixed on scales and learning all of them.

Well, I personally like to learn more scales. I really can't explain why I do, but I feel like it offers a certain variety. But I don't mean to imply that I bind myself to them and refuse to step out of the lines. Hell no, I control them, not the other way around.
