active PUs require power (like a battery) and are more responsive.

so is that something I should look for in a guitar or is it a pain to keep the batteries running?

It all depends on the kind of sound you're after, neither passive or active pickups are 'better'.
As far as battery life goes, as long as you remember to unplug your guitar every time after you're done playing, batteries last a long long time.
