/\ topic/\ For me, I started because I wanted to just spend my recreational time jamming out. My friend also encouraged me to start on guitar. What kept me going with my guitar is guitarists like Kirk Hammet(I'm sure everyone else will probably say the same, or will just flame mr for saying this), John Petrucci, Criss Oliva(R.I.P.), and many others.

I hope that this thread wasn't made before, for I'm new to this message board, so please no flaming.

This topic has been done before but it's forgivable because this is a changing community.

I started by completely random decision. Maybe it was fate. I was in the shop with my brother (bassist) and I saw a cheap guitar and I bought it without any reason. Maybe I was too bored.

Not sure really.

My father was a classical guitarist, he just started me on it to teach me about music.

I was a geek and not very social so I had some time to kill. Eventually guitar gave me some decent attention which encouraged me to continue on.

my parents, initially they wanted me to play violin, but the teachers told them that i'm too old to start(I was 7 then) so they decided that classical guitar is a good solution. Eventually I got into rock at some point and started playing guitar without being driven by anyone else

No man, Faisal Al Alam won the Guitarmegedeon in a state competition. He's really good. You know John Petrucci gave him some special lessions in 1994 and hes in a cool band called the HUMBUGS.

My brother, who is 10 years older than me, got me into cool music when I was a kid growing up in the 80s. He'd always be blastin' metallica and iron maiden and those kinds of bands. I really got into guns and roses when I was like 9 or 10 when my mom bought me appetite for destruction. I thought Slash was the coolest thing since sliced bread. His solos would send chills down my spine and I just had to learn how to play.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

For me it was something of a negative thing - I won't particularly elaborate - but I went through a great deal of depression about two and a half years ago. I had played guitar ages ago but I hadn't liked it and subsequently forgot everything. So I started again from scratch, this time working it all out on my own and teaching myself technique, style, etc. The ability to be able to escape my life when it got too awful, and to go somewhere else when I was playing, was wonderful. I know this sounds corny but when I'm playing I can forget everything that's bad. Which is why 95% of everything I play is my own music. To be able to express my emotions through music is a great thing. So there we have it - not to emulate any established guitarist, but to escape from pain and capture my feelings in songs.

All the wrong reasons (being a poser trying to fit in), though as I grew and learned more about the world around me as well as the music around me, those reasons shifted into comfortable reasons that felt more so right. Wouldn't have it any other way.

My first concert I went to was Deep purple, when they were jammin
to "smoke on the water" it hit me then. I borrowed a cheap no name
guitar from a buddy, Bought an el-cheapo kingston amp from the
pawnshop, And could ya ever guess what the 1st part of what song
I learned ;) My second reason was naturally girls, girls, girls, and more
girls. And as you all know, yep it works :D Mark
