have a question...

ok...now i got a gibson costom guitar, and an amp thats from my dad. now this is my question...i want the amp to hear like a punk rockish kind of sound when im playing the guitar...and i cant do that for some reason probably because i dont know the settings for it .do you guys know where and what volume setting should i put it to make it hear like a punk rockish soundheres the problem, my amp is not made from marshall...right in front of the amp it says "Sunn" so my other question is that if all the guitar amps sound the same?

All amp models sound different and all amp companies have their own sound that they are known for. I don't have any experience with Sunn amps.
A couple rules of thumb-
-punk usually uses lots of mids
-use a healthy amount of gain or whatever the amp calls it. Not enough to do metal, but for most punk you won't want a very clean signal.
-I find the bridge pickup is often the best for punk, although both pups together is also good.
-work on your technique. That will have as much of an influence on your sound as the tonal settings.
-for volume, loud. :)

To continue on this topic. Anyone know any websites that explain the basics of guitar and amp tone setups?
Stuff like - mid set @ _ + treb set @ _ + gain set @ _ = this type of sound.
Also what are the diferences between p-up selecting. bridge vs mid vs neck.
Thanks for any info you have. I have been playing around with different settings and have a great set up for distorted heavy metal but clean tones and bluesy tones are a mystery to me.

Jimmie showed me alot of stuff, but there was a time when he warned, 'If you ask me to show you anything again, I'll kick your ass.' Well, I did and he did. - SRV

It's pretty impossible to give you amp settings for a certain sound, it all depends on what amp your using.
As far as the pickups.. The Bridge pickup is the one you'll want to use to get more treble on your sound, so for a good metal tone or lead sound you'll definately want to use the bridge pickup.
The Middle pickup is the one you want to use for blues, it's got a more tinny sound to it. Listen to some of Dire Straits stuff, thats more of a middle pickup sound. I don't know anyone who uses distortion with the mid pickup.
The neck pickup is more mid and bassy, good for a soft lead tone, not really a good choice for heavy metal riffs. Unless you have a decent neck pickup the sound probably wont be as clear and defined.
Then again im basing the above on a HSH setup. If you have a fender strat its gonna generally be a less beefy sound on the Bridge and Neck, given that they use SSS. Humbuckers are a more fuller heavy sound while the single coils are more defined bluesy type stuff.
Ok...I just realised i'm not very good at explaining things :D

Depends on the amp. Some amps can't do certain sounds. Actually, most amps do have clear limitations.
As far as different pickup places do a search. There was a great physics lesson on here a while ago that explained it better than I can.
