That's one well composed tune. I don't have my guitar with me but I'd have to say that could be played in a C major pentatonic (the A minor pent) to start... or whichever key it's in. He adds some grace notes in there for flavor, like the chicken picking type sounds, and does those 3rd intervals moving up the scale like.

|-----------8-----------10--------------12---
|---------------------------------------------
|--8 / 9--------9 / 10--------11 / 12----------

The formula for creating a mixolydian scale from scratch is this: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, or 1, 1, 1/2, 1, 1, 1/2, 1, whichever you prefer. So, C (whole) D (whole) E (half) F (whole) G (whole) A (half) Bb (whole) C. There you go! C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb.

If you prefer to compare scales to ones you alread know, to generate the Mixolydian scale from a major scale, flatten the seventh (b7). So, C Major = C, D, E, F, G, A, B. B is the 7th, so flatten it to Bb to get C Mixolydian. Got it?

Doesn't it make more sense to call C mixasuckitdownian a Cb7 scale?

... what I mean to say is that modes seem like a useless expense of thought.

Well, modes are actually the most useful thing in all of music, in my opinion.

If you know modes, you can figure out the key of any song, know the chords for any key, improvise by ear, etc etc.

MODES ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And this is why you shouldn't name bands "under the influence" :p They call me Big Pun.

C Mixolydian:

E---------------8-----------10-------------------
B---------------8-----------10-----11--------------
G--------7------------9-----10--------------------
D--------7------8-----------10--------------------
A--------7------8-----------10--------------------
E---------------8-----------10----------------------
