So I've got to learn Halens 5150 for an outside gig which should be cool except for getting that sound. I don't think I can get it given my current equipment situation. Anybody want to analyze what it'd take?

I've never heard that, but I do know Halen has worked with Peavey and Peavey has an amp called the 5150..maybe a connection there?

Why don't you list what you've got, and we'll see if you can wing it?
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Ha, all I've got is a beat up princeton chorus, an old yamaha amp with reverb and something call 'tremolo' (lol), and one old boss metal zone pedal.

So basically, I've got fender dirt, reverb, and chorus; yamaha dirt, reverb and temolo; and boss dirt.

LOL...

Well, I've never professed to be an EVH guru, and have never really taken the time to analyze his tone as much as, say, David Gilmour's. However, from my limited knowledge and exposure to EVH's sound, I'd say that you could probably get by using the Metal Zone. Maybe using two distortions together? Might make a fatter sound.

Also, you'd probably want to heavily compress the signal, so if you can lay your hands on a compressor, it would likely help, although I've found that the MT-2's sound can sound pretty compressed at the right settings.

Oh, and I've never heard 5150... don't I suck?
... and that's all I have to say about that.

That was weird... I had a dream last night that I heard 5150 on the radio, and I was analyzing his tone. It had a clean tone at the beginning, then it got distorted. Typical EVH brown sound.

That being said, I still have yet to actually hear the song. Maybe I'll download it, now that that's legal in Canada.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Ha, yea man, just don't upload. Unless that's changed recently. The tone is dirty, but starts off that way, and it appears to have some kind of effect on it - just not sure which. Some 80s thing and is probably pretty typical with van halen. No standard distortion though by todays standards. Probably light distortion with a flanger or the other one, forget the name. Both of which I've never tried.

being able to play in the style of EVH helps out alot. I enjoy playing this song alot, but I don't have that certain distorted sound you're talking about. He more than likely used a marshall SLP100 head and a variac(reduces the plate voltage I think) to get his sound as this was recorded prior to the 5150 head. He could have also used a Soldano SLO head, but i'm really not sure. As for effects, I've never tried it, but using a slow and light phaser effect might help you get closer. But again, the main thing is being able to play with the same type of feel/style that he has.
