First time I saw mention to it was on this site: racer x - frenzy. Got me really going on the picking and such and into a lot of the solo artists of that era.

Crazy Train was an eye opener for me. Before it, I was playing all this punk stuff, which I hate now.

Try learning songs that use triad shapes for chording instead of your basic bar or open string chords. Guys like Hendrix, Dave Mathews, Van Halen, Rhoads all used these shapes a lot. They make for some melodic sounding chord progressions since the emphasis on the triad is on the melody note instead of the bass.

When I started I just wanted to play rock and metal. Then I started learning classical stuff on the guitar, that changed the way I play now. I've been doing it for a very long time, since I haven't heard anything that has truly changed my played. Introduced to many things but nothing like that first change.

Hey Chris can you give me any examples of songs or excercises that use triads with emphasis on the melody? I am working on that kind of thing right now and would like to see how others are doing it..(not so I can copy it but it helps to learn by examples sometimes).

Well, anything by the 4 guys I mentioned above, Hendrix, in my opinion was the best, becuase he would hammer on and pull off additional notes to the chord, his hands never stayed still. Check out the intro to Little Wing, Castles made of sand, and/or The Wind Cries Mary.
Eddie uses them exclusively, again the intro to Panama is a good example.
Rhoads...the verse section to Crazy Train
Any old Dave Mathews song, like Jimi Thing or Rhyme and Reason.

I find it best to learn the triad shapes that encompass strings 2 3 & 4. There will be 3 shapes for minor, 3 for major. I with the root on each string (2 3 4).
Hope that helps. Forums are a little limiting.
