i noticed many bands' techniques include strumming a power chord really fast, usually in a fast up down motion. When i try to do this it sounds like crap

how do i do this? is it just flicking your wrist, or does it include arm?

I use my elbow and down to strum. I don't think you're supposed to strum from just the wrist. The way to pick up how to strum power chords is by copying other bands rhythms... a good band to start with copying the power chord rhythm is Nirvana.

Yea, and maybe give us an example of what kind of strumming you mean.

You talking like a punkish muted powerchord speed ... picking/strumming? For example... I've got absolutely no punk.

A lot of this rhythm picks the root note (muted and trem. picked), and then power chords are played, without the mute. All it really takes is practice, picking a ton in between where you play your chords. I'll try to put up a lesson some time, but what the others said is true, just copy other songs. Its probably the best way to figure it out.

Get a copy of "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All"....learn them front to back....and then there will be NOTHING you can't play rhythm-wise!! ;)

seriously....another poster said it best. practice, practice, practice...and practice with a lot of gain, so you can get accoustomed to how, where, and when you need to mute.
