When you are playing live what all does your sound man have to make sure that he is doing right? I mean what all does he have to make sure is going on and what happens to make you need a sound man. Is it possible to do a show without one? and do u need one just for band practice???

You don't need a sound guy for practice or small gigs. You'll start needing a sound guy when you start doing gigs big enough you have to plug in through the venue's PA system to evenly fill the place with sound (key word evenly).

I've got a book here called 'the Live Sound Manual' and I've read it. Let me tell you man, if you've started taking your trusty PA engineer for granted then you've got to start using lube again because there's a lot of knowhow that goes into getting a decent sound. It's incredible the amount of stuff you've got to know. Even for a small venue - I'm sure we've all experienced a terribly mixed sound at a small bar. It's all experience, ear and knowledge of the equipment. If 3 quarters of the amateur bands I've seen live had had a decent mix I'm sure they'd be a lot farther than they are today. It's an art as much as anything.

I was a sound guy for a while, the worst bit is having to put up with idiots who think they know it all and in fact don't !
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.
