Maybe you should just get a new guitar.
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

I know... what about raising the action so the strings are higher :)

If the pickups are touching the strings that would sound bad.

Ok, on the sides of the pickups there are two screws (one per side). Turn them anticlockwise. (top right to left) until the pickups are a comfortable distance.

I think that's how it's done on a squire, I haven't owned a guitar with single coil pickups for a few years and I never adjusted the pickups when I did.

I must say, though, that there is a certain degree of charm/romance to playing your music through a really crappy rig. Imagine being as good as, say, Jimi, and being able to play through any rig and sound amazing...

One can dream, I guess! For now I'll have to rely on tone and effects!
... and that's all I have to say about that.

See those little screws beside the pickups? "yes I do". Good, turn them counterclockwise.

Yay, I was right :)

I wasn't sure because fenders have that wierd pickups-stapled-to-the-pickguard thing.
