-what type of music do you play?
-how loud will it need to me?
-do you like american or english tone more?
I would avoid crate. I think they sound decent, but at the same time they're notorious for their unreliability.
I personally think marshall is overpriced, but that's just me. :)

What some would call 'American' tone or the 'california' sound is Mesa Boogie generally.'English' or 'British' tone is Marshall generally.
For around the $500 mark, make sure you get 2x12's.
Check out the Line6 spider 2 2x12 combo
or Randall RG200/RG100SC.

Its always so hard to tell people what kinda of gear is good. Since everyone has their own opinions. I personally like Fender tude amps. I don't like line6 gear at all.alot of people whereilive, swear by them. But i dont like amps with a whole bunch of effects on them. Go check them out in local music stores, bring your own guitar and plug it in and play. Just remember amps are put in two groups...they have Grade A and Grade B..you said you wanted a better quality, then you want an amp that falls in "A".

Look into Laney. They're very versatile. Take the VH100R by them, for example. It's endorsed by professionals in a few different styles and it'll go from gentle suave tones to literally shaking your balls (with an appropriate cab). John Lowery of Marilyn Manson uses one.
