Although I have owned my Strat for only 6 months (and it was brand new when I got it), it already has some dead spots on a few of the frets. I have a few questions about refretting: Is it possible to only have a few of the frets replaced? How much will a typical refret job run me?

I'm not sure about the costs , but you've gotta take it to an excellent tech ... You don't want your guitar to be buzzing at some frets cuz the frets hight aren't exactly the same .

What do you mean by "dead spots"? Just curious.

As SLY has pointed out, this is definitely a job for someone with skill and experience! There are a lot of subtle things that make the difference between a good fret job and a guitar that makes a good doorstop.

These "dead spots" are spots where the fret is so worn down that playing the string at that fret yields either a horrible-sounding non-note or the note that should be heard on the next fret up. If I string up with .009s, my D and A chords in open position are a complete disaster. Stringing up with .010s seems to still be OK, but I have a feeling that if I do that, the strings will keep grinding the frets down to nothing, so I think my only option is a refret job.

One of my friends has a little fret wear like what you said on his guitar , but it never buzzes or sound the next note ... Seems like the wearing on yours is pretty deep , is it a Fender ? If so , Mex ,Jap or Am ?

A Squier actually, and I think it's Chinese. It has a humbucker at the bridge position, and the guy at the shop told me that the brown sunburst finish was somewhat rare.

There are no "RARE" finishes on mass produced models , unless it's graphics or custom paintings.

BTW , if the refreting job is going to cost much , you should consider replacing the whole neck cuz it's easier and a much safer choice.
