Look into cort. I would highly recommend something from the G or M series on this one.
If you're going to be doing more rock/metal than jazz, you might look into the x series or their newer models zenox or katana (that one might be over your $$).
Cort makes some incredible products. You can get pretty much a decent professional quality instrument from them for not too far off your budget, unless you're like me and have to have everything perfect (I'm thinking of putting prs pickups in my CL-1000).
Btw, cort also makes guitars for fender(squire), epiphone, bc rich, ibanez, schecter, conklin, and a few others, so if you've been looking at those companies you might as well cut out the middle man.
Fender is a traditional multi-role company, a tele or strat might be good. Ed Roman was selling some American fenders for really cheap, if I remember right. Not as good for the money, but there's nothing wrong with them.
Or maybe look at schecter. They may be made by cort, but ther are some differences between the companies that might fit your tastes more, maybe something like a tempest.

My personal preference is Yamaha, but I have heard good things about Kramer as well. Your budget of $500 (US?) allows you quite a bit of leeway. The main thing is to shop around and try out as many new and used guitars in your price range as you can get your hands on. Forget about brand names - close your eyes, and open your mind and your ears! Happy hunting! :)

You could get an alright Ibanez RG series with $500 US couldn't you?
Peavey says to the Marshall: "What's Reverb?"
Fender says to the Ibanez: "Please, explain to me further what it means to 'stay in tune?'"

Acutally, since you play many styles of guitar, I would go with the Fender Stratocaster. I myself also play some of the same guitar music as you and I am doing great with my Stratocaster.

I play, or have played, all of those styles on my Yamaha SBG1000. It's like a double-cutaway Les Paul (only better :D ).

It's an Epiphone Les Paul Standard, "ebony". Right out of the basement, not a floor model.

I got my Fender strat for $320 something.. but I think I got a pretty good deal on it.. it's a fat strat mexican edition and I've seen those go up to $450 ...
I have to agree with Pony One tho... opinions are like _______ (use your best) everyone has one...
so use your own opinion, go to the music store, ask, play, try and let us know what you found! =)
