Hi!

I don't know if this topic allready has been discussed, but anyway:

Which songs is forbidden to play in a music-store when you try a new guitar?

My personal opinion:
"Smoke on the water"
"Nothing else matters"
"Stairway to heaven"

Kinda stupid, acctually, but it feels like a golden rule or sumething.. Ghaa!

I always like to mess with people especially at the guitar shop. So I usually pull out alittle "twinkle twinkle little star" and "frosty the snow man". Is snow man two words or one? Anyways I think songs like these are forbidden in a guitar shop unless your an outlaw. ;)

I find that Steppenwolf "Monster" is a very effective 'old fart' detector! :)

I know the store owner where I'm from completely hates when people play this one metallica riff

E-0-3-5--0-3-6rb5--0-3-5-3-0

That one.

Yeah, the one where Jaymz starts singing about recording their first album in Montreux and some stupid with a flare gun burning down the studio.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Playing and singing "La Bamba" at the top of your lungs while outputting the amp to headphones.

Actually, one time I went to the guitar store and there was a guy playing the electronic drums and listening to them on headphones. He wasn't that great, but what was funnier was that he was singing along to what he was playing. The best song was "We Will Rock You".
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Horrible attempts at 'fade to black'.Of course they all skip right over the intro solo.

I'd be a bad guitar salesman...
You would see kids running out of the store crying with thier hopes of being a famous heavy guitarist shmuck destroyed.

You're probably right, I've never heard the song. I don't even know what song it is. What I have heard, though, is about a dozen people play it exactly like that and call it metallica, so my point still stands :)

i want to add

Black Sabbath - Iron Man

Metallica - One

i don't know how many times i've heard wannabe guitarists try to play taht in guitar stores. i was laughing with a sales guy about it
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

Why are people playing al those songs to tryout a guitar?
just play some scales I think, try to play some solos... thats when you find out if the guitar is good enough I think :)

The way to see if a guitar is any good(correctly) has little actual playing involved.First check the specs...make shure they meet what your looking for.Check the guitar for cracks,chipping,orange-peel and inconsistancies in the finish.Next check the neck to make certain its not warped by looking down the fretboard with the bridge at eye level.Check over hardware for any flaws.Look over the fret/inlay work as well.

finally...bend some notes on all strings to assess tuning stability and check for fret buzz.
Obviously you want the guitar to 'feel' good too.

No need to play any song...

I think you would most definitely need to play a song.

Each guitar has a different type of tone to it. The difference in wood, makes each and EVERY (even if it's the same brand, same type of guitar) sound different.

Also, what about the pickups. Even though most stock pickups suck, you still would want to hear what they sound like if you were purchasing that guitar.

If you're looking at a stereo system, you should bring along a few CDs, tapes, LPs, that you're very familiar with, so you can accurately judge the sound.

The same (only more so), with guitars! You need to play something that is as familiar to you as breathing, so that any differences become apparent to you right away.

If that means subjecting the store staff to something they are tired of hearing, don't worry about it.

You are in that store, playing that guitar, because you are interested in paying a large sum out of your hard-earned savings for it. The sales staff are in that store, listening to you play that guitar, because they make their living by selling instruments to people who are willing to part with their hard-earned savings, Their discomfort at hearing your version of something they've heard too many times before is temporary! Your unhappiness with an unsuitable guitar is 24/7 until you can get rid of the offending beast, often at a financial loss!

There are no 'forbidden songs' - only people who expect to be entertained every time they see someone pick up a guitar. Such folk should limit themselves to nightclubs. Music stores are for those who wish to sell instruments, and those who wish to buy them.

uuuurm... I have spoken. ;<{)
