If by "tremolo" you mean "vibrato", or (the technical description) wiggling your fingers while fretting a note, the two are separate. Perhaps you will want to use vibrato while tremolo picking, but the two are not inextricably linked.

Tremolo picking is like what Van Halen does at the end of the Beat It solo. (I mention that solo because I'm trying to learn it. By "trying to learn it" I mean "listening to it over and over again and playing something that sounds completely different when trying to play it")

Also, check out Spanish Fly by Van Halen. Basically, it's just picking the note as fast as you can, while the fretting hand generally stays pretty calm.
