Scandinavia and death metal
Death metal, black metal etc. Not my bag at all. What I'm interested to know is why so many of em come from Scandinavia e.g. Children of Bodom, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, King Diamond, Bathory and from Florida e.g.Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary? With the Scands I thought it might be the long bleak winters, but that doesnt explain Florida. I dunno much about these bands at all. Just that their names often crop up on this board so I thought I'd check em out on AMG.

I have no idea why some places gain a reputation for producing successes in certain genres.
I'm pretty sure COB is from finland.Never heard of scandanavian death metal, but black of course.I know immortal used their cold surroundings for inspiration.I think sweden is best known for its death metal. Why some of the greatest bands came out of florida is beyond me...I lived in palm beach gardens and any kind of music scene was non-existant.Mabey up in tampa its better...
Anyway...yeah,geological differences are often used in association with different styles.

Black metal in Scandanavia is not only a music genre, but a way of life. The lyrics are based on Viking mythology, Odinism and the belief of a superior Aryan race which is dominant in those regions and taken very seriously.
As Chuck stated, the surroundings also play an intregal part in the subject matter. The cleanliness of the air, the beauty of the mountains and the pureness of the white snow have the related notions of energy, discipline and spiritual elevation that is Black Metal.

Yea, the florida death metal scene is enigmatic at best. There's no such thing as seasonal effective disorder down there. I live in Ohio, and anytime you can just look up at the cold, dead, grey, sky and around at all the dense forests without their leaves and really feel like death surrounds you. But if you're depressed and live where palm trees surround you, then it's your fault, not the weather's. LOL
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.
