OK, Axl's last post made me want to know:

What is your preferredd strap length/height?

For a while, mine has been pretty high; the guitar is basically centered heightwise on my waist. However, yesterday I saw a picture of Jimmy Page wearing an LP so that the top edge was flush with his waist, and it looked pretty cool. So I might try that out and see if it works comfortwise.

Then, there's the Metallica strap length, where you tie two straps together and let them both out all the way....
... and that's all I have to say about that.

I play with the strap rather short.

One reason behind this, the more you get the strap low, the more you'll use your elbow which is bad.

Elbow problems will haunt you down with time.

I always pick by making movements from the fingers or wrist, I try to keep the elbow motion to a minimum. You'll be faster too by using fingers and wrist motions. Less pain, faster picking. Get a beer and you're in heaven lol

Anyway that's my opinion

Depends on if I'm playing bass or guitar. With guitar I put it so it's about centered at the waist, with bass I set it lower.

Yeah, but that's a small price to pay for looking seriously cool.

LMAO.

I suck way more when I play standing up. I'd say that over 95 percent of the thousands of hours I've played guitar have been spent sitting down. It's easier for me to play when the guitar is up higher, but looks cooler when it's hung down low. Nipple-riding only looks cool if you play bass. My 2 cents.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

Nah, bass looks better lower because you can move it around that way. Nobody wants to watch a statue jam.

As for both my straps they go both as low as possible.
MetallicA style :P

looks cool, and I can play what feels comfortable for me.

The other day I tried to play Metallica sitting down, I got cramps all over my right-pickinghand! and I didnt felt like picking as fast as standing up.

When I play acoustic I do sit down.

My rule off thumb.Keep the top of your guitars body at your belly button(or an inch up above it,depending on the size of your torso, arm length and guitars body/shape.)
Its comfortable enough to not degrade picking and left hand use.If you have any pull or stretch in(or in back of)your right shoulder and/or the forarm at elbow length then you have it too low.The middle of your picking hand's palm should be able to rest on the low E comfortably.
Well thats more than rule of thumb.

Later! \m/

Ha ha its been a long journey though strap lengths from me, short to very long and now back to resaonably long. Its now so that when my les paul neck is pointing 45 degrees, kind north east if you like, that the toggle switch area of the guitar is just below my belly button.

Call my sad but years ago i analysed guns n roses videos to gauge how low slash guitar was :)
Now when i let my arm fall hanging down, the bridge where i rest my hand when pickin is only a couple of inchs higher then my arm hanging normally!

You notice people like me and slash ( :) ) hold our guitars up to play solos! Its cos we cant reach the high frets!

Also the coolness depends on jean tightness and t-shirt length lol! I saw a pic of me playing guitar that someone took and i was ashamed! The t-shirt hang too low, so now i tuck it in a bit!

I think your guitar should ideally be quite high up when you're standing up. It should feel as though you're sitting down with the guitar. Know how you feel so comfortable sitting with your guitar? Well that's how it should feel standing up. The more comfortable you are, the easier you can access higher notes and pull off more intricate stuff. If your guitar hangs too low, you won't be able to alternate pick properly with your picking hand and your fretting will be sloppy.

I'm thinking those could hurt. :)

Well, I don't really care about the length/height of straps, because I only have one. I'm too poor to buy a new strap, plus I'm saving up to buy a hard case for my baby... I mean guitar.
