Anybody here who can play the Solo at the end of the movie "Crossroads", because I´m just learning the first arpeggio, but i don´t know if my picking style is right:

I play it like the power tab on mikes guitar site. I guess i should do sweep Picking, but i only do fast single downstrokes(At the moment I can play this measure with about 105 bpm(goal:130), and my right arm is not too tensed up, I think.

So can i just play it like i have learned it, or MUST i do sweep picking?

Well, I guess you could play it all with downstrokes.

But sweeping is much easier.

And it will be easier on your arm, you shouldn't be tensing up so much.

I would recommend alternate picking the arps rather than sweeping. Alternate picking in this instance is better in my opinion because it has more 'attack' and sweeping these arps will sound weaker (because these arpeggios consist of more than 1 note per string, rather than 1-note-per-string-arps). I think all downstrokes is way too much work.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! If you haven't seen it, go out to blockbuster and rent the movie "Crossroads" released in 1989. NOT the Britney Spears movie!

Lol, I'd be impressed it Britney whipped that solo out at the end of that movie.

As for playing it, not that it would easier or whatnot, but doesn't he use like a finger picking technique in the movie. I haven't seen that movie in a long while, but I thought he did something like that. I can barely remember how that goes, think I'll make a trip to the video store aswell.

Ok I´ll try alternate picking now, it also seems to be logical, because with sweeping i also thought it sounds too weak if i listen to it.

To Trent J Liberty:
Yes, the kid in the movie(played by Ralph Macchio, the karate kid actor) uses his finger picking for this solo, but it was made by steve vai in the studio. I was just wondering how did they manage that you don´t see that it´s not ralph macchio who plays this.

Ralph Macchio DID learn to play it. All the other guitar you see in the movie was performed by him (Although I'm sure it was overdubbed).

Oh really? I didn´t think that he was able to play that, but this must be the only solution. was he also famous as a guitarist? Because the solo at the end is known as a quite hard solo, or isn´t it that hard for you guys?

No, look in the end credits, Ralph Macchio was given a guitar coach who taught him to play like that. Ahhh, to be a celebrity. And I don't know if it's hard for me, I haven't tried it. Judging by the looks of it in the movie though, I'd say it's pretty ragin' hard.

LOL what he's doing with his hands there does not even vaguely resemble what it really looks like.... when Vai is playing it s the real deal though :)

it also kinda looks like they sped up the tape when macchio is playing certain parts. i could be wrong though

To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

Yeah, they probably did. I didn't mean he was capable of actually playing that song. But he WAS trained fairly well.

And its really not all that hard a solo. Even when I first heard it, people had been playing paganini on the electric for a while (thanks to yngwie)!

I'm not a big fan of the flik' "Crossraods"; but if you are, try looking up a CLASS player by the name of...
"Arlen Roth" (Guitar Monster)

You'll know more of how the music was composed & recorded for [that film].

I'll bet some HOSTS here know about Arlen Roth??

OK, gotta' go! Bruins' game is back on!

So now it makes sense....., now when I look to it, I see that he didn´t play it the how it goes...

So when I will have finished this solo, which will take still 2 months or something, how can I classify this accomplishment in comparison to the hardest things i can play now(These are just these metallica solos, master of puppets and almost the whole blackened solo)
PS: I`ve been playing for 9-10 months.

Well good luck then, I still can't play it at the right speed... PS I've been playing for 17 years.

LOL yeah or maybe I just suck. Maybe try a somewhat simpler excercise first? In my experience it's better to crawl before walking :)

Yeah I just try to master the first arpeggio at the right speed, and if I manage this I will try the whole solo, because the first one is one of the hardest parts in my opinion.

In my experience it wasn´t bad trying something carefully that it´s actually still too hard for you. Because when i started MOP solo half a year ago the beginning was actually totally out of my league, but the more i practiced the better it got, and it became lick that just really pushed my technique forward. And so it is now: I started it with 50 bpm and now I can play the arp with 110bpm, so i thought this would be a possible thing to do, but maybe I´m wrong...
