I just use a simple tablature program called TABLEDIT and it plays everything back in MIDI. The program has a pretty sweet drum tab setup that allows you to mess with all kinds of intricate rhythms and get a fairly realistic sound depending on the sound font or MIDI chip you have. Plus tabledit doubles as a tab program so you can transcribe your songs at the same time as you make drum beats for them to get an idea how it could sound either way without any hassle.
