As a guitarist who has done a lot of studio work in the past I always insist on micing the amp. I find you lose a lot of sudleties in your playing going direct, not to mention the tonal responsive of manipulating the amp and hitting the sweet spots.

For rhythm tracks it is sometimes better to go direct, can give you more of a tighter sound.
