I see what you mean about using slides. .. To get back into a particular pattern. Like:

E|-------------8-10-11-/13-11-10
B|-8-9-11------------------------------13-11-9-\8 etc.

In C, / means slide up, \ slide down. I don't actually want the slide to sound, it more represents moving the same finger up (or down) to hit the second note.

One more quick question too: Anybody's index finger almost sideways on the fretboard as they get closer to the head of the guitar? Like so that the one side of it is what makes contact with the strings, not the tip? .. Not just near the head either, almost everywhere.

Yeah I don't mean play a slide, but move your finger up to that fret like you said. It can also get you to somewhere you want to go. Try this version of the A major scale.

o i r p i i r p i i m p i i m p i m p
e-----------------------------------9-10-12--
b-------------------------7/9-10-12----------
g-----------------4/6-7-9--------------------
d---------2/4-6-7----------------------------
a-0-2-4-5------------------------------------
e--------------------------------------------

Try that run at the beginning of a solo, then use the ending note E (5th of A) to begin a different sequence pattern. You can see where 4 note per string scales are a benefit, cause you got from the open string to the 12 fret fluently and with ease. The same can be done descending.

Nope if I understand that correctly. All my fingers sit straight down on the frets even on the lower frets of a bass. The only time my finger sits side ways on a fret is when I play the really high frets on a non-cutaway acoustic (like the 20th). Man I hate that.

How high do you carry your guitar when you play? My guitar is pretty high compared to most.

Reminds me, does anybody else practice only while standing up? I find it a trifle annoying when I see guitarists who can solo, but need to put their one foot up on an amp so they can play.. as if they practice sitting down and then can't do it standing up because their guitar is too goddamn low to do anything.

.. That's a decent riff by the way, just not my style. I'll probably end up going through something like that eventually, but right now it's not the direction I want to take.

My guitar sits is right in the middle of my stomach, so theirs little difference in standing or sitting. Works nice cause I spend just as much time sitting as standing anymore. I tried lowering my guitar down, but it makes it nearly impossible to play complex chord shapes and I like to do that. That tab wasn't much of a riff but thanx, it's just the A major scale. Just a different version of playing it. The trick is it's a very fluid way to get to that high-e 12th fret from the open A, or if your going from one position to another position. Just a trick though.
