I'm looking at buying a new guitar. Currently I play a PRS custom22 which is a pretty mellow/dark sounding guitar. I'm looking for a guitar that is bright, hot, light, and has a maple neck. A friend of mine has one of the lower line peavey wolfgang's and I really like the way it plays and sounds, but I don't like the flat top. Does anybody know if the upper line wolfgang's with the carved maple tops sound and play much different than the lower line guitars? I also like the fact that the upper line guitars also have a tone knob which the lower don't. If I do get one I want it to have a quilt maple top, maple neck, with a natural gloss finish, and a stop tail....NO, and I do mean NO floyed rose trem.'s. I had an Ibanez once that had one and I was miserable with it. Any oppinions or experience with the wolfgang's is what I'm looking for. Thanks for any help

I've actually thought about the variax, especially the new model 700 with the carved top and mahogany body, but I've heard that the palm muting isn't quite up to par. Plus the only thing I know of that sounds close to a wolfgang is a wolfgang. If you ever get a chance to play the variax, let me know how it sounds. I'm into line 6 gear, but am just a little leary about the variax. but I've never plaid one, so I can't judge it yet.

I have one of the archtops, and I love it. Even if it isn't a Kramer. It's got a great sound, thanks to the quilt top. I got the Floyd though.
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

What does the finish have to do with the sound?

The 'quilt' is not a finish, but the grain pattern in a slice of maple veneer that is applied to the top of the guitar body. The ripples are produced by distortions of the grain by stress, at the base of the tree trunk, or where a large limb meets the trunk. This wood has a particularly high density, which tends to give it a 'bright' sound. A slab of this wood, say 1/2" thick, can add some clarity to an otherwise dark-sounding wood like mahogany. This is the combination used in the Les Paul. If the layer is nearly paper-thin, it will not significantly affect the tone, but is merely decorative.

I must just not have an ear for that kind of thing. I've played all sorts of guitars, and i've never really noticed any difference. Hell, **** bodies, just give me some strings and a pickup I'll be happy.

At least you're honest. That's better than some people who blow thousands of $$ on a guitar that doesn't sound any better than your average cort or dillion just because the name.
