guitar on airplane question
i've yet to play, but i'm eager to learn. my sister has a guitar at home in WV. i'm in FL. either i'm going to have her ship it or i'll somehow bring it back here when i go home from thanksgiving or something. would any of these cases be okay for shipping or for under a plane?? http://www.samedaymusic.com/browse--Acoustic-Guitar-Cases--2565 thanks in advance and i hope i didn't do this in the wrong forum. thanks, jon

Airport baggage loaders hurt things deliberately when they see the "Fragile" signs. If you want my two cents, don't take a plane, brave the 15 hour drive and play it safe with the guitar.

You get two carry ons on an airplane trip. Make one your regular carry on and the other your guitar. Put it in the top bin and be careful when opening the bin. That's how I got my baby up here to Minnesota.
"You must stab him in the heart with the Bone Saber of Zumacalis... well, you could stab him in the head or the lungs, too... and the saber, it probably doesn't have to be bone, just anything sharp lying around the house... you could poke him with a pillow and kill him."

I've been on a LOT of planes in the past year, and on only one of them the overhead compartiments were big enough to store a guitar(with or without a case).
Your best bet is to keep it in a gig bag, and ask one of the flight attendants very nicely if they can put it away safely somewhere.
Here's some more info on the matter: http://www.win.net/~mainstring/carryon.html

Well, I've flown from Minnesota to Louisiana and back 4 times this year and I've brought my guitar in my gig bag and it always fit in the overhead compartment... if not I'm sure the flight attendant would take it though.

The fact that I've mainly been flying on 777's might have somthing to do with the tiny overheads I always seem to encounter...
Anyway, it's basically just a matter of having the luck of either being on the right model of plane, or having cooperative attendants on your flight. Some airlines are just more strict than others when it comes to oversized carry-ons...

well - incase your guitar gets damaged on the flight, you can always take over the plane and seek for a building to steer it into. :D

feel free to do so - we deserve it as much as you did. and you wont hear me complaining when someone starts to joke about it. there are soo many jokes on real terrible things. and why not i say? jokes are the human way of getting over something. however - if i hurt anybodyĀ“s feelings, then iĀ“m sorry.

Carful Azrael...Guys in suits with sun glasses and those wire things on thier ears might follow you around during your everyday life!Who knows what shocking secrets you hide!
911 was a lame event...seriously.Yeah many people died, but the numbers arn't massive or unusual...its the fact that Americas semi-safe bubble burst.thats what hit people the hardest.Does anyone recall Nagasaki or Hiroshima???
They both make 911 look like a fender bender...Americans(or everyone for that matter)need to look past their lives, realize its all just a flash in the pan and leave the fake patriotism behind.(note:I'm American myself).
Later! \m/

point is (apart from the fact that is amazing how a simple remark gets peeps started) that as long as we cant get along with our neighbours next door on a small scale, how are nations supposed to get along with echother? so when you look at it that way, everyone is responsible. noone can say "you deserve it but i dont". see what i mean? technical development has exploded in the last 150 years and brought weapons upon our hands that noone ever dared dreaming of. but have our brains evolved? when i look back at a few thousand years of "development" we are still as dumb as we used to be. i wonder if there is stillenough time left for us to brighten up before someone pulls the trigger.

Well since everyone else has found something to talk about EXCEPT your acoustic problem, I will throw in my 2 cents on the situation.
1. On the link you have they have an SBK ATA case that is airline approved at $180.00. That will work, but pricey. A good investment though if you plan on travelling quite a bit with the guitar.
2. Put it in a gig bag, and purchase an extra seat. Most airlines would make you do that for an item as large as an acoustic. Good if you are only going to fly with it once or twice. The extra ticket is probably cheaper than the flight case in 1.
3. Buy a molded plastic case with good latches and a way to put a lock on it. (If you can't find one with a lock on it, you can always drill one in from the hardware store.) and brave it with the baggage compartment. Just remember "Fragile" means kick me in Italian....
4. Pack it in a good plastic case with a lot of bubble wrap, put it in a box, seal it up good with packing tape, and UPS it back home just before you leave. Most cases it will be there about 2-3 days after you get home. Don't forget to insure it for like 2 times the amount of the guitar.(If you don't know, make sure to insure for like 500-750 dollars, otherwise UPS is only gonna give you $100.00 on a claim. If you claim it's worth that, they have to give you what you claim it is worth in the event they lose it.)
Whoops Zena..Warrior Princess is on. Enough of this net stuff for me....
Personally I would do number 4. It would only cost you like $20-$25 bucks that way, and someone else besides you would be responsible for getting it to you in one piece. Just don't write "Fragile" on it. The guy who told me it was kick me in Italian was a UPS driver....:)

So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

I wasn't trying to provoke a political discussion, just trying to remind people that it isn't in very good taste to trivialize human suffering, mass or not. I don't think there will ever be a day when you'd find a joke about, for example, your mother's death humourous or in good taste.
Feel free to continue the political discussion, I've stated my point.

Call me sick, but I would most definitley find a joke about any of my family members deaths humorous(as long as it was funny).A tasteless crack such as "your moms dead and rotting right now" would be obviously stupid, but something halfway funny such as "your dead mother just called me,she said I was fu*kin hot!" would be just fine.
Azrael was right when he said humour is the way humans(some)deal with tradgety and loss...

Here's an idea..... insure the guitar for ten times it's value- Then put a bumper sticker on the case that says "BAGGAGE HANDLERS ARE LOW LIFE MINIMUM WAGE MAGGOTS"
Then collect the $$$$$
No but seriously, the overhead bin is what I use. They never promise this-(that way they can discriminate if I looked Middle Eastern, which I don't)but I always end up putting my guitar anywhere I want.
P.S. If your guitar is shaped like Bloody Axe (like GENE SIMMON'S) I would'nt try it.
