Check out Joe Satriani's pitch axis theory, it might help.

depends on what you want to sound like. if there are no limits for you, then you can switch from whatever to whatever you like ;)
besically .. learn as much theory as you have to, but as little as possible.

If you want to stay with the Phrygian motif, then try some Kokinjoshi scale. It's basically just Phrygian with some notes left out.
Do a search in the tricks for weird oriental scales. I believe someone posted a tutorial on that topic.

If you are looking for some funky new scales then take a look at my website, I compiled a load from books. My page needs updating but there are about 40 different scale forms (no modes, all different parent scales) and they are tabulated in terms of how many notes they can have in common with each other if their root notes are optimally arranged. it's on my brother's website, go to "Friends" and then to "Andrew F". http://www.classaxe.com
There's a fantastic site with a fretboard mapper at
http://www.power-chord.com/gaff/mapper/
you can input your own scale formulas too.
