for some reason here lately my triple XXX head has had this loud buzz/hum. almost as if I were standing right infront of a tv or computer. but nothing is on. it's not noticable on the clean channel, a little on OD1, and very noticable on OD2. could this be a bad connection somewhere, or could one of the tubes be going bad? It still sounds good, only with the extra buzzing hum. it's never done this before, and I've only played it 3 times since it started, mainly to see if it was still doing it (which it was). Any help will be greatly appreciated! btw, I'm still kind of new to tubes, so go easy on me if it has something to do with them...lol

If the buzzing sound changes as you move your guitar around, it's probably something being picked up by your pickups. If wiggling your cord makes the sound change, you should have a close look at the plugs and jacks at both ends of the cord (ie: your guitar & your amp input).

the buzzing stays the same no matter where I stand. I've even tried cutting everything electrical off that's anywehre near where I play. I've also wiggled and jiggled all connections (on the outside) and nothing changes. I'm going to try moving it to another room and a different outlet. I've always kept it plugged into a very high quality serge protector, but I'll try without incase that might be part of the problem. Like I said before, you can hear it in all 3 channels, just the more gain, the louder it gets. Thanks for any help.

Hey Playa, when the buzzing starts, reach down and unplug the guitar cable from the amp, do you still hear the buzzing, or does it stop? Give it a try and tell us what happens OK, ...........

I'm at work right now, so I can't try that, but I can tell you that when I turn the volume off on my guitar there's no buzzing. or if there is, it's not very noticable. When I play through my other set-up (PODxt through a power mixer to a floor monitor, or PODxt to a tech 21 amp) it sounds normal, no buzzing.

a little more infor....... I think it might be something to do with the pre-amp section. When I plug my PODxt into the effects loop and my guitar into my pod, completely bypassing the pre-amp, there is no buzz/humm. Could one of the pre-amp tubes be bad or going bad? If so, I'm thinking about changing out the tubes anyway, and wander if anybody has any experience with electro-harmonix tubes. I'm thinking about going with the EL34's (since there's a bias switch for these inside the head) and some new 12AX7's. How much would that change the sound as apposed to the stock sovtec(I think that's what peavey uses) 6L6's and 12AX7's?

Stock Peavey tubes are made in China - not a source that is reknown for high quality. EH has a good reputation; give 'em a try.

guess what....today when I plugged straight into the head there was no buzzing or humming on any of the channels. I didn't change the first thing so I have no idea what fixed it, but it's not doing it any more. at least for now.

Hmmm..... probably while you were sleeping, the Tube Fairy came in and fixed it, check under your pillow for an itemized bill...... Ah who knows, could have been sun spot activity, high tide or a ufo hovering near by, but hey it's good and it didn't cost anything, cool!..........

"Have you ever had this problem before?" asks the doctor.

"Oh, yes, many times." says the patient.

"Well", says the doctor, "It looks like you've got it again."

Well Playa since this thing don't wanna go away, it's time to start narrowing down the possibilties, swap these out in order if you can, Room/outlet location, guitar, cable, pre-amp tubes (one at a time), that's about all that can be done at the user level, occasionally power tubes will hum when going bad but it sounds to me that you have it narrowed down to the pre-amp, I would even venture to guess that it's one of the middle two, you have four right?..................

I believe it the XXX only has 3 pre-amp tubes. I'm going to try moving it to a different outlet, but if that doesn't work, I'm going to go on and take it back to the music store and let them mess with it and also switch to EL34's instead of the 6L6's. Thanks for the help

I was just looking at my head the other day and noticed that right next to the EL34/6L6 switch is a little knob to adjust the bias. could it be possible that that needs changing a bit. also, by taking the metal sheilding off of the pre-amp tubes, could I tell by looking at them if one of them has or is going bad
