I've been working on tapping with my thumb. Yhe thing is you can get some great runs using your right hand thumb as well as your fingers - try some route position arpeggios and use the edge of your thumb. It's actually easier than using just your fingers. You might want to see some of my postings on the topic:

I can now play exclusively right handed melodies at a fair pace.
