I’ve noticed that I practice much more consistently when I give myself a mix of exercises instead of spending the whole session on one technique. I’ll usually spend a little time on chords or scales, then work on a song or riff that I actually enjoy playing.

For those of you who have been playing for a while, how do you structure your practice sessions? Do you follow a specific routine, or just pick something depending on your mood?

I’m especially interested in how you balance technique practice with actually playing songs. Sometimes I feel like I’m making better progress when I stop worrying about whether I’m practicing the “right” thing and simply spend some time playing.
