Master a scale

If you were to quiz me on how much I know about a scale or my mastery of it, what questions would you ask me or look for. There has to be more to a scale than just the shape and knowing the order of the degrees. I’m trying to gauge how to effectively learn a scale.

I would ask you to play some music with the scale.  Play a melody, a lick, a riff, a motif, a whole solo using that particular scale.  Knowing the fretboard pattern is the first step.  Understanding the scale degrees (in other words the intervals) is the next step.  Then it's time to make music with it.
