David Martin here. I am 48 and currently living on Hawaii Island.
This is the third time I have picked up and tried to learn guitar in my life. In my 20's I just bought some books and muddled around, eventually dropping it. When Rocksmith came out, I thought for sure a video game could teach me. Not so much.
Now I am trying to be more focused and organized. I have an in person instructor that I can check in with every other week or so. I have a subscription to Ultimate Guitar for the tabs, and I am working through Anders Mouridsen's Fundamentals here.
I've made much more progress than any time in the past. A big jump forward just happened a couple of days ago. I bought myself a decent guitar that fit my hands. Originally I was using a cheap generic starter guitar because I was not sure if I was going to stick with it. I have massive hands, and was struggling with my ability to improve. Someone suggested a wide neck guitar. I tried one in the local store, and it was like night and day. My fingers fit between the strings without muting the neighbors, and the V-neck gives me some meat to wrap my hands around. Plus, it has a much better tone and action that my starter unit (It's Recording King RO 328).
I'm having fun, and putting in the practice time. I am going to start looping in some of the simplified beginners versions of songs with the regular lessons.
Thanks all.
