You're welcome. Another thought occurs to me. Every time I've taught a young player I noticed it was helpful to tailor the curriculum to keep them engaged & motivated. With that in mind it might be helpful to tell him to consider focusing on things he is passionate about & for the time being skip things that he don't pique his interest.
For example the chapter on fingerpicking might not be interesting right now. And it's a skill that will require a lot of repetitious practice. So that might be demotivating. So skip that material for now & work on something that will motivate him to practice a lot. For example different strumming patterns, or adding embellishments. Eventually, if he keeps playing guitar he'll reconsider the topics he skipped & go back to them to flesh out his skills.
I think it's really important at a young age to keep kids incentivized to practice as much as possible. Because these are his formative years any skill he develops now through dedicated practice is invaluable & irreplaceable.
