Most of the material is doable with an acoustic, especially the rhythm guitar material.  I think the only material that might give a student trouble is the lead guitar material with string bending.  When other students have asked about working through the course with an acoustic I've told them to just skip those parts if they are too difficult or if they simply have no interest in them.
