String noise (Steppin Out)

Mike,

I have been working on Steppin Out.  I can hear strings ringing out when I play through the amp. I don’t really hear them when I play without the amp or at low volume. Is it normal to have some strings ringing out?  I have tried to figure out how to mute them but don’t really know if it is necessary, or I am being overly critical of my playing. I hope this makes sense. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. 

Hey there - thanks for your question! Whether or not to mute the strings that are ringing out through the amp is a personal choice. You might not mind that sound if you're playing a loud rock song, but maybe, if you're playing a technical passage, you'd want it to sound as clean as possible. It is a great skill to learn how to mute the strings so that you can do it when you desire. I recommend checking out this tutorial:
