Dammit, I meant add2, not sus4. The thread should read: add2 = add9?

Anyways, I was formulating chords on a piano (because my head feels like it will explode when I do that on a guitar). I noticed that in any major key, a add2 chord sounds like the add9 chord in that same key. Am I simply not appreciating the difference due to my lack of ear training, or is that really the case?

Oops, I think it just dawned on me. Is it because a 9th scale tone is the second scale tone in the next higher octave?

Yes, you've got the right idea.  The 2nd scale degree an octave higher is the 9th.

Thanks Chris. Apparently, it's time for me to make yet another pass through your Music Theory course. Every time through I'm amazed at how effectively you (assisted by Beethoven) present the information, and how much I learn.... followed shortly by my amazement at how quickly I forget most of it. I think I'll take notes this time - something that I can review on a regular basis.

You're welcome!  Learning the ideas in music theory is often like practicing physical skills.  It gets better, clearer & deeper with repetition.  The same thing happens at all levels.  I'm still learning things & making new connections as I keep studying it.

Keep working on it!
