I have another question about my finger placements.

When I am fretting with my pinky finger it tends to lay sideways and I am fretting with the side of my finger rather than the tip. I think this is from years of keyboarding where I have trained my pinky to lay on its side.

Any thoughts on how I correct this? Is it something that will fix it's self as my fingers get stronger?

It depends on much your pinky has acclimated to that posture & how much time you spend practicing & training it otherwise.   In the end, it might not be a problem at all.  Every individual brings their own unique finger topology & idiosyncrasies to the task of playing guitar.  I have relatively small hands, and as a consequence had to figure out some alternate ways to play certain chords & lines.  As long as you can fret the notes you need to to play the music you want, there's no problem.

In general, practice will make you fingers more agile for the task.  Just keep working on the fundamentals.  If you find you want or need some exercises to help change your pinky, these tutorials cover how to build finger strength & dexterity in general & with a special focus on the pinky.
