artificial harmonics

how would u play like a row of artifical harmonics like randy rhodes and eddie van halen(eruption the intro) anyways how would u do a artifical harmonic i was told u would strike a note then your thumb would supress half the note causing a high pitch tone, welli doubt i have that good pickups maybe thats why.
