Hello,

I bumped into this performance of "All the best" by John Prine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBksI8zbhrg

[From 14:45 - 17:40]

I can't understand how to obtain that sound: he uses the  clean right hand but it seems that he pulls up some  chords during the up strumming.
Can someone please, explain me?

Thanks

Thumb on the bass notes (E & A strings), fingertips grazing down & up on the upper strings.

He's using a capo at the 4th fret to use C & F open chord shapes to play E & A chords.

Anders covers this technique in this tutorial from the acoustic course.

Hope that helps!

A unique voice - writing and singing - that I certainly miss.

I never did get to see him live, but I have watched live performances over the many years.  Nobody like him.
