Hi guys!

seems like iĀ“m running into a complete new situation..

iĀ“ve never concerned myself with campfire songs, but it seems that this weekend, iĀ“ll have to play a few, for iĀ“ll meet some dudes from the internet who know that i am a guitarrists, and probably one of them will take a guitar with him so that we can make some music while camping...

well.. the problem is - i dont know any songs that fit! i know that those songs consist mainly of 2 or 3 simple chords, but.. what songs should i actually memorize? any suggestions?

Harrghh! What you need is a half-dozen beers, (each), and a rousing rendition of Stan Rogers' "Barret's Privateers".

And leave the guitar in it's case.

it's not a campfire song, but Blind Guardian's - Bard's Song - In the Forest may not be a bad idea. it would work
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

I've only played round a fire a few times......beach party fires rather than camping. On those occasions I didn't really think about campfire songs, I just played what I knew trying to think of songs that worked acoustic and that other people were likely to know.

Man, if you only were french canadian, that's all we have campfire songs.

It's a big part of our folklore

I usually don't play english songs around the fire but House of the rising sun is a must like Tele Master says.

Tears in heaven by clapton is pretty cool as Change the world.

You could always play South of heaven by slayer but I'm not sure about the reaction lol

I always to play Wherever you will go by The Calling, and I'm pretty sure you can pull it off nicely on the vocals too ;)

BTW, not that it has something to do with this post but check out the band Sinergy. Worth it if you don't know them.

Dude, I love campfire songs, and most of them you can play whilst you're FUBAR (F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition)! My idea of a campfire song is something that's easily played, easily recognizable and singable for most people, and something that everyone will sing out and have a good time with. My favorites:

Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffett
Country Roads - John Denver
All I Can Do is Write About It - Lynrd Skynrd (any Skynrd song actually: Tuesday's gone, Freebird, etc.)
The Drunken Sailor - Traditional
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Dylan
Can't You See? - Marshall Tucker Band
Your So Bad - Tom Petty

Well, the list goes on and on, but this should get you started if you decide to go for it! They're mostly simple 3-chord songs.

i just hate the thought of sitting there with a bunch of lunatics, playing 3 chord songs that i dont even like, just they can sing along. plus afterwards they say "hey your pretty good at the guitar" - as if you can tell that by playing 3 chords ... iĀ“ll just get drunk and smash the guitar incase someone takes one with him.

How about a rousing rendition of "Little Martha" by the Allmans....I know it's originally done w/2 guitars but with a little creativity you can arrange it for 1 ( I was once hired to play this at a wedding ceremony).
So this situation sounds intriguing, tell us more......you are going into the woods with a bunch of strngers who you never met before who know you play guitar, but now you don't wanna play and are just planning on getting drunk?

i dont want to play campfire songs for them - and from a few experiences i know, that wehn i start off with some classical stuff, peeps find it quite amazing, but when iĀ“m done they want me to play some of the sing-along stuff - and thats where i start to crumble to dust - simply because i have never ever played those songs - so my repertiore of that sh*t equals ZERO. and since i dont want to disgrace myself, iĀ“d rather prefer not to play at all.

Sea Shanties!!!

Ewan MacCall!

Play "Off To Sea Once More", or anything from the album "Blow Boys Blow" , "Thar She Blows", etc!

very cool tunes, and not many people know about them....My band plays alot of Sea Shanties, electric, and people say "woah, that was awesome, what was that?" and then its like turning a whole generation on to old Folk Music.
