Coming clean...sordid musical secrets
In previous posts Ive been singing the praises of guitar wizards like Leo Kottke, Albert Lee, Satch, Hellecasters, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, jazzers, fingerpickers etc. Now I'm going to come clean. Sure I like the stuff from these fellas. However, last weekend some friends were going through my CD collection when they came upon 'Significant other' and 'Chocolate starfish..' This caused much mocking hilarity, tho' my 2 daughters (11 and 13) think it hugely embarrasing that dad 's dark secret's been outed. I admit it 'My way's' one of my all-time favourite tracks.

No laughing matter, I love cheese  Music isn't just about being serious for me....I've known many musicians who bored me to death because they're music didn't have any fun to it. Not only do I look to pop/disco styles of music to influence my own, but I find I can only sit and deconstruct forms, modulations and techniques for so long before I get to burnout point....then it's good to get out to a club with some friends and get dancing to some cheese.

Chocoloate Starfish! That's a sanitised name for an anal sphincter! Ha ha! I don't know what they teach kids at schools these days but did your daughters appear to know this? Sorry that's a bit of a frank question isn't it.... You don't have to answer that!
I must admit that I quite like some Daft Punk (though "round the world" makes me want to kill things). Most of what I listen to is deadly serious and I must say that that's beginning to suck. Every now and then I hear some catchy pop song and actually like it but I never buy it. With the exception of Pink Floydd and a few others Im a die hard instrument shred head fan.

If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

Not so much the anal sphincter as the the a*****e itself. not sure they do know this, but hey.... live and learn. i'm not exactly Tipper Gore when it comes to censorship. i also think Britney's quite cute, I once bought a record by Duran Duran, i drive a Japanese car and I watch Smallville cuz Kristin Kreuk is one helluva babe.

Yes The Haunted are good.I forget which bands the band members used to be in...at the gates e.c.t I think.
anyway..Just for the record.
I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT SLIPKNOT AND ALL NU METAL FOR THAT MATTER.I find some of there tunes "catchy"...Thats where the fondness ends though.

what the hell is nu metal.. if ur refering to bands thqt just recently came out then slipknots out that league..theyve been out since 1995 or if ur refering to metal without solos and just basic cchord riffs..mic had mad solos in a couple of their songs but ross robinson the dickhead he is wouldnt let him do his 20 seconds or so of wanking off on the guitar

no,no,no!
I define "Nu metal" as any hard rock/metal band that has the intent of "aimed marketing" and money in mind.
Slipknot definitley aims themselves towards young teens.
It may actually be the record company or other outside parties thar have the marketing motive, but I still think bands are responsible for there direction and path.
The fact that slipknot didnt take action and let there music be controlled so far beyond there reach leads me to feel there Nu metal. That just my opinion.

I should also point out that Nu metal got its first real kick with korn.I'm not sure of the timeline but I think around 95 they(the music "industry")realized there was a "market" to be had,and so began the onslaught of "marketed metal".That wasnt the first(and unfortunatley wont be the last)time music had been a "product".It was simply the realization of a sound with amazing profits.
