metronome??
ok do i need a metronome for building up speed.. my guitar teacher thats been playin for 40 yrs said i dont need one but just to slowly build up on my own..he said they get annoying which they do..wat do u guys think??

I think you do. Building up speed on certain things, scales, other peoples tricks, your own stuff, can make you faster, but it wont be in time.
You might rip 6 notes really really fast and then come to a more difficult part and slow down to play that part and you would fall out of time. If you had a metronome you can play it at a certain speed, and the turn it up and play it at that speed smoothly and so on and so forth.

exactly - training with a metronome (not matter if you are practicing speed or technique or improvising) is absolutely necessary for you to get used to play in time. if you never practiced along with a metronome or a drumcomputer, you will definitely have a hard time when it comes to play along with a band.

ill look for one somtime but were i live there like $40//the hard thiong for me is gonna be the annoying tick and what type notes to play..like if its a 3 scale patern at 100..its all confuzin to me but it should clear up eventually

Well I play with and without metronome. They are annoying, but as far as speed is concerned they do help you keep time. It's like a discipline use it and benefit it from and see results fast or take the freestyle method (which is to go without metronome) as see results slower.
I did managed to up the speed of some few scales I practice upto 20 bpms but that took like a month :eek:
If you do decide to get one.. get ones with percussive sounds not irritating beeps (like my one which I got in the beginning cos the local store didn't have anything else). In the long run you're ears will love ya. If not.. just download one off the net as least.

hmm.. actually ... playing scales at 20 bpm EXACTLY in time is WAY harder than plaing them on 200bpm - so i dont think that its embarassing

whoops, sorry, i must have misunderstood the post; I thought it was regarding becoming quick and speedy on the fretboard.

Well on 16th, I play at around 140 bpm at max. And to answer your question Incidents, no I don't play them at 20 bpm :D Well hopefully I'll reach 200 someday.
And the thing without metronome.. I play in time without it meaning, I don't slow down suddenly for the harder parts. Simply sitting down playing the hard bits until I get it. But obivously when I want to get faster I use the metro once a while, cos my biological metronome I call it can't keep time. So don't get me wrong when I say I don't use the metronome sometimes.
