I am also new in the "effects" area of guitars, but go with BOSS or DIGITECH. If you want to get a multi-effect processor, then plan on spending big bucks. I am going with 2 BOSS pedals and it will cost me $195(canadian). At first I think you should choose what effects you like and go after just that pedal.

I like Digitech, I use the RP-6. It's old but man it rocks. So many effects and built in noisegate. It rocks.

by the way, when you want to 'quote' somebody, hit the 'quote' button by that person's post. It's universally used on this forum.

Ibanez makes a good tube screamer, the TS9 Classic (not the other one), I played one, very good.
Go with analog effects (not digital), you will thank yourself over and over in the long run. I went the multi-effects way, and i wish i hadn't.
When I redo my effects, I plan on getting mostly Boss Effects, you can't go wrong with them (in most cases).

I love multi-effects. You don't have 8 different pedals strewn about the room, just one compact board with everything to offer. Completely customizable, no complaints from me. I love it.
