Apart from the quantity of practice they do together (which is stunning as it is), what is it that makes that band seamlessly put such chops-saturated music together? I'm referring to HOW they practice. Stupid question of course, but it would do prog-metal aspirant bands a world of good if they could understand the methodology which DT follows.
Dream Theater
What is the secret behind the music of this band which is absolutely impossible to emulate or even cover?!

Ahhh my band of the moment Dream Theater.......makes you think of warm thoughts when you hear them.. Anyways, the best way to emulate the guitar parts (which isn't as hard as it sounds) is to firstly check out JP's video 'Rock Disipline' then start working on Erotomania to get a feel of their style. My bandmates joke around about how they put their song together, we sit there and play older style rock ya know the good stuff, so it's pretty much the same stuff rehashed over and over. We all guess that their practice / recording ideas go something along the lines of this. One of the members stands up and askes the question "Does anyone have a idea that no one has ever heard before?" and they all raise their hands.....that's all we could figure out about how they do it =P.
Oh Speakin of DT, their playing at the house of blues tomorrow with Queenschyre !! WOOO best 45 bucks I'll ever spend!

Writing such music isnt all that difficult - what you need is a large variety of styles that you are familliar with and a good, professional working schedule. I have seen mike portnoys drum video where he explains how they work - LTE for example is 90% jamming - some of the songs have been written within just a few hours. They encapsulate alot of standards just playes differently. The way he explains it, it becomes very visual and not realy difficult.

Nope Ruyard it was the HOB in Orlando Florida, and Azrael your right, most of their music isn't all that difficult to come up with, just gotta know when to add your 9ths =P. I only wish LTE would do a #3 =/
