i need to add some style to my solos and im constantly coming across the tapping technique. i have tried copying by eye but with no luck. i was wondering if anyone cound explain the basic principles of tapping and 2 handed tapping and how to acheve a nice clear sound. and perhaps provide a very basic set of licks i could practice to learn this techniquie

as an extra note... will a cirtain choice of effects be usefull? i presume the audiability of my tapping will be linked to sustain and the quality of my equipment?

As a beginning , I think you might get better results using pick tapping instead of fingers ... Also effect settings helps , try adding more distortion , reverb & slight delay , if you have a compression pedal put it on.
As for guitar settings , lower string action is easier to tap on .

First learn to tap basic arpeggios with different patterns :

Am
e-t12-p5-h8--%|

Amaj
e-t12-p5-h9-p5--%|

Adim
e-t11-p8-p5--%|

A+
e-t13-p9-p5-h9--%|

Apply each pattern with different root notes to get other arpeggios , and try each arpeggio with every sequence (try coming up with your own sequences too).
After finishing these , try practicing them on more than one string , include string skipping ,add bends/slides or whatever, develope speed , and try tapping some scale patterns too .

I love tapping.
I agree that effects on tapping sounds bad.
try with your guitar unplugged and when you get a nice
clear sound...then keep that technique.
if you want to get a nice easy introductory tapping piece look about for the intro of acdc`s thunderstruck.

Paul Gilbert has some awesome stuff. Here's a pattern he uses alot in his stuff.

e: t16 p9 h12 t16 p12 p9

That's the whole pattern, it sounds sweet when sped up and is very simple to learn...
