My question is, do you have any tips on improving speed for playing solos. I've tinkered with a few solos but cant quite get the right feel and sound.

Get a metronome and gradually build up the tempo when practicing scales.

When you could play a certain fast lick , always try to push it further with speed , I mean a little faster than the original ... You'll be amazed by how easy it is to play it in normal speed again , so you get more controle and less chance to mess up during a gig.
