tricks
Experiment with different effects order from the guitar to the amp , it will make a significant difference.
I mainly use chorus for some clean tones , and occasionaly for lead tones.
Reverbs are the most used effect in elec music , it can add or take a lot from your tone , be careful to setup the parameters correctly to match the specific tone you need for a certain song or music style you're playing.

Whammy bar tricks are generaly dependant on distortion ... To make them sound cooler , you can use delays & feedbacks.

Use the distortion box as a kill switch. That is, set the level to 0 and whenever you turn it on you'll instantly turn off the volume. I've just been thinking about that recently, it's not really a very interesting trick, is it. Try putting the boxes in reverse order. Reverb, then chorus, then distortion. It will sound like mud, but it could be good mud.
