I've been really getting into playing and listening to the nylon string guitar over the past year or so, and have become quite enarmored w/music of Spansih descent, especially Flamenco. Here's my question:

Are their any other Flamenco recording artists that even come close to having the mastery, speed, and intensity of Paco de Lucia? Everybody I have listened to sounds like a novice when compared to Paco. I would really like to expand my listening pleasure but have not been able too find any Flamenco players that excite me.

hmm...have you tried Al DiMeola? He, paco de lucía and John McLaughlin has done a 43 minute long guitar-trio, they are all very skilled.

"Juan CARMONA" my friend Chris (how ya doing? :) )
He's from my hometown, and he's the only winner of the international "Paco de Lucia" prize, since they don't necessarily award it, if Paco thinks noone deserves it...
You can also (in a nylon string stuff) listen to Sylvain Luc, he sounds like Allan Holdsworth meets Chet Atkins guy (he does both at the same time :) )

Al and John are not in the same boat as Paco, both play a watered down americanized version of flamenco, using picks and steel string guitars. I am familiar w/the trio albums and if you ever heard one of Paco de Lucia's cd's I think you would quickly agree.

Yo Lali!! What up man.
Can you tell me a little more about Juan Carmona, does he have any cd's out?

I'm not an expert at it, but he's like the big thing right now in France, for guitarists. He's a gipsy, and he was born in Marseilles, he has studied with Paco and others for several years. I've had several students that came to me when he stopped teaching (when his music became good)
Check out his site http://www.juancarmona.com/
