which dream theater solos would be best to learn to help me practice and help me work on my picking technique?

Evry one of them. John is a big fan of alternate picking. You can always start out with Metropolis fast triplet run wich he plays along with keyboard somwhere in the middle of the song.

Yeah man, that last solo is great yet not too difficult. Some wacky string skipps but it´s simple fingering. Actually the first part (before string skipping) is harder.

If you want to get into string skipping more, check out som licks and solos by Paul Gilbert especially during the Racer X (80-s) era.

I practice em pretty much. I really like the sound when playn´ some on small strings and than jump over to fat ones and so on. There aren´t no huge skipps on Erotomania solo though, I think it´s like 2-3 strings max, but some Gilbert stuff that I play have e-E jumps and they are pretty nice.
