I've had a teacher for the first couple of months to learn the basics ,reading tabs, standard notation and a little theory , then I quit lessons only progressing by playing tabs I find in tab books or online , and I don't think it would have been any better to continue with lessons.
Also some books , articles ,etc. help.

If you realy need some books/vids , I think John Petrucci's "Rock Discipline" and Yngwie Malmsteen vids are quite helpfull if you've reached the intermediate point of soloing.
