It's a matter of creativity of course , and that's something that can't be taught , but music theory and a bunch of scales' patterns in your arsenal would be great.

Even if you have natural talent, scales are very important, pentatonic blocks, 6 string and single string major/minor scales, after you perfect those the rest is relatively easy

some people get too caught up in scales to realize that they aren't really playing music, they are simply playing with the limitations of scales. Use the scales to open up your visions of what it should be, but when performing, make sure you're not 'playing scales', make sure you're using the scales to make something musical.
