I have a '74 SG and it's my primary guitar, rarely do I play with the others.
Like Lord said it does detune easely. Especially when you bend a lot. I don't so it's not a prob for me.
I never found a better neck than the SG. Very narrow, makes for easy play. I don't have the original pickup on it tho but I really like the sound. Very rich.
One word about pickup and the SG, If you intend to change the pickup be very picky.. I got a pickup that came with a metal casing very thick. Because of that, I can't get the pickup as low as I would like due to the fact that the SG body isn't thick.
The neck is VERY fragile, mine had been broken in the past as about 80% of the SG I know :) If you're like me and don't have long fingers, SG is a good bet, narrow neck makes it easier to play.
I always recommend it, but now with the epiphones been good alround guitar I would suggest that you go into a music store and try both of them first. I must say I've played with epiphone that sounded as good as mine does for a fraction of the price.
